    Tougher than PLA

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS), is the same material from which Lego bricks are made. Surfaces printed in Ultimaker ABS will have a matte finish. Other materials like CPE and XT have much higher chemical resistance, whereas ABS excels at maintaining its strength at higher temperatures. As such it is known for its exceptional mechanical properties and used by an array of industries worldwide.

Specifically formulated to minimise warping and ensure consistent interlayer adhesion, Ultimaker ABS allows the creation of functional prototypes and complex end-use parts with ease.

    Reasons to choose Ultimaker ABS

ABS is used to print functional prototypes in automotive companies due to its high strength and durability.

    • Excellent mechanical properties
    • Excellent interlayer adhesion, especially when using the front door add-on
    • Withstands temperatures up to 85 C
    • Great for exceptionally strong prototypes or end-use parts
    • Allows to achieve nicer aesthetics compared to other ABS filaments
    • Formulated for an easy 3D printing experience with minimal warping and good bed adhesion

    Printing Specifications

ABS is best printed at temperatures between 235 C and 250 C, with higher temperatures being more favourable. For first layer adhesion, we generally recommend use an ABS juice/slurry made with acetone. The suggested bed temperature for ABS is 110 C.

As sudden decreases in temperature will cause ABS to warp while it's printing, it's critical to shield in-progress print jobs from air vents, windows, air conditioning, etc.

Works With Most 3D Printers That Accept 2.85 mm

Ultimaker ABS is tested primarily for use with Ultimaker 3D Printers. But, it will also function quite well on any other printer that works with standard 2.85 mm size filaments.

ABS requires a little bit more care and attention to achieve desired results. Thus, we generally advise customers that are new to 3D printing to "test the waters" printing with PLA, first, before exploring ABS.
